  1. Things that are good that are free

    1) Air

    2) Hugs

    3) Bad Banana- Crushfield

This is a lovely project from the Crutchfield sisters of P.S. Eliot fame. There are ten songs here, each one a bit of lo-fi indie-pop/pop-punk goodness, very much similar to Eliot’s Bike Wreck Demo. If you’ve heard of Plumtree (from Scott Pilgrim I’ll bet), both bands have their similarities to the Canadian ladies I myself have grown quite fond of. I first heard P.S. Eliot somewhere on Tumblr, and I was sold as soon as I laid ears on Katie Crutchfield’s voice. I assure you, everything these Crutchfield sisters get involved in is worth a listen. Or five.

    4) Erin Tobey- Booyah Grandma Demo

Erin Tobey has a beautiful voice. The “whoah-oh”s in “Psychology Song” absolutely turn me into mush. These songs are well-written bits of folky pop, just Erin’s voice and her quiet guitar strummings. This only clocks in at nine minutes with four songs, and that is the only bad part about this demo. I’m ordering a copy of her full self-titled album in the other tab I have open.

Also, I suppose I’ve been really in the mood for lo-fi recordings of female singers.

    5) Scott Pilgrim Extras

If you know me, you probably know I love Scott Pilgrim. The comics and movie are vastly important to me, and the website for the comic offers some fancy little extras for huge dorks like me. If you scroll down the bottom of the link above, you’ll find some Scott Pilgrim comics that are not exactly parts of the books themselves! There is a comic about Kim and a short arc that the movie borrowed from that both fit in between the third and fourth volumes, and a short one about Sex Bob-Omb. Plus, for those of you who have read the comics, a rendition of Scott’s ode to his employment at the Gilded Palace of Flying Burritos by Matthew Seely can be downloaded right here. I love it.

    6) Kupek (Bryan Lee O’Malley’s music)

I was going to end this post with #5, but then I found this. The man who created Scott Pilgrim, Bryan Lee O’Malley, also makes his own music under the name Kupek, and he has posted up nearly everything he’s recorded to be downloaded freely. I have yet to hear any of it, so I can’t describe it, but in all my fanboyism, I’m assuming it is fantastic. After I post this, I am going to download all of it.

    7) Evolving Portmanteau- Seven Songs to do Laundry To

This is an album by my buddy Evan Foster, a little bunch of bitchin’ electronic tunes. I love this guy, and the stuff he makes is quite cool. I’m pretty picky about electronic-type music, and I really dig what he makes. You can download this for free, but you can donate to him if you want (you too can help a broke college student purchase Mountain Dew).

    Dear followers,

Obviously, I adore free things—especially on the internet. If there’s something free and awesome you know about and think I should know about, reply to this post or leave me a message and tell me about it, and I might just give it a look, and maybe write about it. If you checked out any of the above and have something to say, please tell me!

    Have an excellent day.
