  1. Ginormous robot hands and itchy chins

The other day I took a trip to the thrift store down the road, as I often do, regardless of location, with a couple of friends. I intended to go for a job application—I came back with a job application, and Meet the Beatles and The Kinks Greatest Hits on vinyl.

“I Want To Hold Your Hand” has never quite sounded as beautiful as it does right now.

For a moment, I just close my eyes and listen.

On either side of me are friends playing video games. I must say, gunfire over “It Won’t Be Long” is a bit of a strange thing to hear. I love being around these guys.

I’m living with a best friend of mine for the summer, and I’m trying to find a job. I’ve applied to a different thrift store, and I’ll soon fill out the application I picked up. Aside from staring at LPs in endless yearning, Chrono Trigger has been loaded up on my laptop again and again in another play-through the past few days (Spoiler alert, Magus just joined my party). It feels nice not having to worry about posting things to the school website, or writing another paper, or scribbling out a poem that fits a format.

It’s nearing a month since my last final exam of my first year in college and lethargy has sunk in dramatically. My visits to Colorado Springs throughout the school year were always simply opportunities to do just this—play video games and relax with my friends. The reality of my being here for a few months has yet to land, so I currently sit in a lazy in-between.

Hopefully I’ll do a lot of reading and writing over the next few months as I search and try and get both scholarships and employment.

“A Well Respected Man” sounds so much better spinning on a turntable.

Once side B of this one is done, I’ll go grab the rest of my albums and enjoy them while reading Douglas Adams. Later, we’re going to go see if the carnival is still in town.

My girlfriend tells me she’s never been to a carnival, and I really wish I could take her to one. That makes me miss her even more. “I Want To Hold Your Hand” earlier didn’t help either. But I’m glad she’s only a two hour drive away.

    Hold on, just a second…

I’m definitely in the mood for the older LPs in my collection.

Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of my favorite records, but it always sort of makes me sleepy. I’m so familiar with it that I get really comfortable as soon as it starts. It’s a lot like Colorado Springs for me in that way.

I close my eyes one more time and recite:

“Gee but it’s great to be back home

Home is where I want to be.

I’ve been on the road so long my friend,

    And if you came along,

    I know you couldn’t disagree.”

This is going to be a great summer, definitely.
